Later, Trenseta talked about his own growth and maturation, which he pegged to touring as rapper Skee-Lo’s “hype man” in the mid-1990s, after Skee-Lo released his hit single “I Wish.” Hype men have a simple role: fire up the audience before and during a live show. The most famous hype men (like Public Enemy’s Flava Flav) stand alongside the main performer and engage the audience in call-and-response, get the audience cheering, and simply engage the emotions of audience members. Trenseta’s time on the road with Skee-Lo was pivotal. He learned a lot about the challenges of being a recording artist:

It wasn’t my style of music, but I got a riff of what it’s like to go on tour, hit tours, and have to be up and go to the show and do this and everything. And publishers and all that type of stuff, and interviews—I was a part of that. I wasn’t the head man, but I was a part of that, ’cause I was helping him with the shows, and we was on stage, hype man and all that, and that’s when I was like, “Damn, this is for real.” Like, “You could really be a star.”
